PUBLIC SERVICE IS MY CALLING

Steven Mac is the son of refugees, a Lt. Colonel in the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG), a Deputy District Attorney, and a candidate for LA County Superior Court Judge in seat 135.

His parents were refugees of the Vietnam War, fleeing the country collectively as what became known as the “Boat People.”  They made their first home in South Central Los Angeles near the LA Coliseum, where Steven was born. They found work as a waiter and a garment factory worker.  Steven attended school in the LA Unified and the Montebello Unified School Districts.

Steven attended the University of California, Berkeley, on an Army ROTC scholarship and was commissioned as a military intelligence officer in the Army Reserve.  Steven advanced to the position of commander of a counter-intelligence company, responsible for training soldiers to support operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Korean Peninsula.

Steven graduated from the UCLA School of Law in December 2007 and joined the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG).  He is still in the Army Reserve, with 20 years of service and now holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

In his first job as an Army lawyer, Steven Mac served in the Trial Defense Service, analogous to the public defender’s office.  There, he defended soldiers accused of misconduct by the Army. Between military duties, he also practiced civil law, representing clients in real estate and contract disputes.

In 2012, Steven was deployed in the Army to the war in Afghanistan as a fiscal law legal advisor, responsible for ensuring our operations complied with congressional appropriations.  He was stationed mainly at the Kandahar Airfield.

After deployment, Steven joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in 2013. From 2015 to 2018, he was assigned as a felony trial deputy.  He joined the Hardcore Gang Unit in 2018.  For the last five years, he has prosecuted murders in LA.

Steven Mac believes in service to his country and his community.  Among his military awards is the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.  Currently, his volunteer efforts are focused on the mentorship of first-generation students and new officers in the Army.  He currently participates in Teach Democracy with the Los Angeles County Bar Association and has also, in the past, volunteered for Project LEAD, a program where DDAs volunteer an hour a week for a 20-week instruction for 5th graders about the justice system and the importance of making good choices.

Steven Mac:  “I am dedicated to service because this country and this community welcomed my family in their time of greatest need.  I am running for Judge to continue that service.”
